New Year’s Poem 2017

At 1:30 am

You called your father

For a ride home

If you seemed faded

He restrained himself

From accusation

Instead he told you

About the year he spent

As a monk in Japan

Your mind reeled

As you realized

You are becoming this man

But there was no fear

Or disappointment

Only gladness
